Kathleen is a 56-year-old African American woman who presented with a one-year history of hair loss, difficulty in achieving hair length, scalp itchiness, and chronic use of a flat iron to straighten her hair. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA).
What is CCCA?
CCCA is a form of scarring alopecia that marks its territory predominantly at the crown of the scalp, expanding outward in a relentless centrifuge. CCCA is no stranger to women of African descent – it affects around 15% of the entire population. This severe condition rarely touches men or those from other ethnic backgrounds, but research is ongoing.
Symptoms of Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA)
- Inflammation
- Hair root and generalized pain
- Tenderness
- Scalp scarring
Why Diagnosing and Treating CCCA is Difficult
Diagnosing the symptoms of CCCA can be complex due to its gradual onset and similarity to other types of hair loss. Traditional treatments, like immunosuppressants, often provide temporary relief with side effects but fail to stop the condition’s progression. Plus, they have the undesirable side effects pharmaceutical drugs come with, including skin irritation, mood swings, stomach upset, and other side effects.
Kathleen’s Gashee Story
Kathleen began to see progress after stopping the clobetasol 0.05% ointment and 50 mg daily of oral spironolactone she had been prescribed. She started applying 1 mL of topical GASHEE lotion daily to each palm-sized area of her scalp daily where she noticed hair loss.
The Role of GASHEE in Kathleen’s Recovery
Even after getting her results, Kathleen still uses Gashee to nourish her hair and scalp.
- Morning Routine: Every morning, Kathleen begins her day by applying Gashee™ Botanical Hair Serum – Rapunzel to her scalp.
- Evening Routine: Before bed, Kathleen repeats the application of the Gashee™ Botanical Hair Serum – Rapunzel to maximize the treatment’s efficacy overnight. She massaged another pea-sized dollop gently into her scalp.
Visible Improvements and Benefits for CCCA Using Gashee
Following the results of the study in Treatment-Refractory Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia Responsive to a Novel Botanical Treatment, we see results form. Kathleen began taking Gashee oral hair supplements, four capsules a day. She underwent two sessions of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) scalp injections. While Kathleen had noticed her scalp pruritus resolving and her CCCA not progressing, she did not see advanced hair regrowth at this point. At the same time, she began taking oral minoxidil at 0.625 mg daily.
After five months of treatment, there was little improvement in hair growth, but her scalp itching had stopped, and her CCCA did not get worse. She then had a session of scalp injections with micronized fat, but 13 months later, there was still minimal improvement. Due to supply issues with the oral Gashee supplement, she was advised to use the topical Gashee lotion twice daily instead of once.
At eight months, Kathleen experienced rapid hair regrowth with significant coverage in areas that had not responded to previous treatments. Oral minoxidil was then stopped, and she continued using only the topical therapy. Follow-up visits at three and four months showed continued hair growth, new coverage areas, no hair shedding, and significant improvement in hair length.
